COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Douglas-Elbert County Horse Council will hold an emergency preparedness clinic on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Multi-Purpose Barn in Castle Rock—attendees will learn how to prepare for safe evacuations and manage disaster response using lessons from the 2002 Hayman Fire.  Castle Rock News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Town of Castle Rock is inviting residents and other Douglas County applicants to volunteer for advisory boards and commissions until 5 p.m. on April 28—openings include positions on the Board of Adjustment, Water Commission and other groups. Interviews are scheduled to begin around May 14 with appointed volunteers starting their terms on June 1—this effort will let community members help shape local decisions.  Town of Castle Rock
  • At the Elk Creek Fire board meeting on March 27, board member Chuck Newby voted against approving a pay increase for Chief Jacob Ware to $150,000 and an MOU with the firefighters union, saying proper legal review was not followed—he also claimed that the district was at risk. Vice President Dominique Devaney defended the board’s review process while Newby and another board member appealed a plan to unify fire districts without voter approval, with a public hearing by Jefferson County Commissioners expected in the future.  Castle Rock News-Press
  • Colorado firefighters now use a high-tech SimTable to train for wildfires by simulating fire conditions in real time. The tool—bought with a grant from the Department of Homeland Security—will travel among agencies and be used in a joint training later in mid-April to help crews and homeowners learn how to protect their communities.  Denver7
  • On Friday, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit that aimed to stop Colorado from capping prescription drug costs, ruling that Amgen did not prove it would be harmed. The Prescription Drug Affordability Board set the cap on Enbrel after it became too expensive for many patients.  Denver7
