- ➤ The Early Childhood Service Corps—started by Lisa Armao—pairs older adults with early childhood classrooms to ease teacher shortages and lessen loneliness in Douglas County. The group, which has over 200 statewide members, offers free remote training in roles like classroom volunteer, business advisor, and substitute teacher with sessions beginning in June. - ➤ Young local leaders are invited to apply for the Town of Castle Rock Youth Commission to help shape community policies; candidates in grades 9-12 who are local residents or have strong community ties must apply by July 31 and will be interviewed on Aug. 20 & Aug. 21 as they prepare to serve from September through May. - ➤ Highlands Ranch Rep Bob Marshall — former commissioner Lora Thomas — and Lone Tree resident Julie Gooden have sued the county commissioners, alleging they held secret meetings since mid-December that violated Colorado Open Meetings Law. The lawsuit claims the closed sessions were used to plan home rule resolutions without proper notice or record, and it asks a judge to stop the practice. Castle Rock News-Press
- ➤ A group of citizens including former commissioner Lora Thomas, Rep. Bob Marshall and unaffiliated voter Julie Gooden filed a lawsuit against Douglas County commissioners for holding secret meetings that violated Colorado’s open meetings law as they planned to convert the county to home rule — the lawsuit asks a judge to stop the change. - ➤ Douglas County community health leaders are offering Mental Health First Aid courses to help residents learn the ALGEE steps—assessing risk, listening, giving reassurance, and encouraging help—to support those facing mental health or substance use challenges. The six-to-eight-hour trainings, available in-person and online and featuring modules for youth, older adults, and rural communities, are supported by a grant from the Behavioral Health Administration.
