  • In 2023, Colorado granted 125 temporary Extreme Risk Protection Orders from 168 petitions, up from 64 in 2020. Attorney General Phil Weiser said the tool helps keep guns from people who might hurt themselves or others + some critics argue it can infringe on due process.  Denver7
  • A Trinidad man, Roy Allen Elliott-Casaus, 33, was sentenced to 13 years in prison after ramming a stolen car into police vehicles during a high-speed chase in Castle Rock in early 2022—he pleaded guilty to charges including assault on a peace officer, aggravated motor vehicle theft and vehicular eluding.  Denver7

HEALTH NEWS

  • At a statewide mental health summit sponsored by Colorado AG Phil Weiser and the Broncos Foundation, clinical psychologist Lisa Damour presented seven research-based tips to help adults support teen mental health and emotional resilience. Damour urged adults to listen carefully, validate feelings, and be honest — avoiding premature problem solving — to build trust with teens.  Castle Rock News-Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Young athletes aged 5 to 18 will compete in the annual Tri the Rock youth triathlon on September 7 at Butterfield Crossing Park and Pool, with races starting at 7:30 a.m. for most groups and 10:30 a.m. for the youngest. Registration is $70 until Aug. 26 with a deadline of Sept. 2—free informational clinics on Aug. 31 help beginners learn the course details—so families are encouraged to sign up early.  Town of Castle Rock
